The Blizard Institute laboratory management aims to provide a comprehensive and efficient management and support infrastructure for the Institute laboratories in order that the world class research that is carried out here is able to operate efficiently and safely.

Staff and student induction

Most new staff and students will first meet us when they come for their building and laboratory induction session. The induction process has proved to be a valuable means for ensuring that everyone who works in the building is well informed in how the laboratories operate, and also what is expected of them in order to be able to work safely and productively during their time here.    Click Building and Lab access tab for forms.

We aim to manage the day to day operation of the laboratories and some of the core facilities without being too intrusive, in order that staff and students are able to work with minimal interruption. Where problems do occur with equipment etc. in the laboratories we will try to deal with these matters as efficiently as possible.

Some of the things we do

Among other things, we provide support and advice on all laboratory-related Health and Safety matters, assist with purchase of capital equipment, special gases and duty-free spirits. We manage the freezer storage and monitoring systems, arrange repairs and schedule the preventative maintenance of core equipment and portable appliance testing (PAT) for electrical safety. We also operate a Life Technologies consignment stock system which is useful for purchasing small quantities of cell culture media and reagents for protein expression, isolation and analysis and transfection/selection.

We are based in the Laboratory Managers’ Office (OE-15 G-92) on the ground floor at the east side of the Blizard Pavilion. Please feel free to come and speak to us about any laboratory-related matters or if you wish to suggest an improvement to laboratory operations. If we are unable to provide an answer to your queries we will certainly be able to put you in touch with someone who can.

Health and Safety Rules

Introduction

Staff, students and visitors to Queen Mary University of London must observe and comply with the Health and Safety Rules.

 

Staff are reminded that the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) states that it shall be the duty of every employee while at work: 

a)         To take reasonable care for the health and safety of him/herself and other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work; and 

b)         To co‑operate with his/her employer in implementing the provisions of the Act. 

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR) 1999, requires that an assessment is made of ALL hazards/risks arising from work, for employees and anyone who might be affected by the work.

 The ‘employer’ in this context is Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) and the Principal has overall responsibility for Health and Safety matters within this College. In addition to the College’s own Health and Safety policies, http://qm-web.safety.qmul.ac.uk  QMUL also abides by the principles of best practice in Health and Safety management as prescribed by the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) contained in University Health and Safety Management: Code of Best Practice.

Access requirements

All new staff/students and QM card holders who don’t currently have access to the Blizard Institute are required to undergo an induction into the Institute’s buildings. This describes the laboratory services, health and safety requirements, especially those applicable to staff and students who will be working in the laboratories, fire regulations and security systems. The induction programme also includes an escorted tour of the building during which the circulation routes, restricted areas and means of escape in the event of an emergency will be explained. Inductions are conducted by one of the Laboratory Management team and take place by appointment on Mondays and Fridays at 14.30 starting from the Blizard foyer. At least one hour should be allowed for this event. Access is weekdays 08.00hr - 20.00hrs. Additional access, see 'Lone Working' below.

A copy of the ‘Local Health and Safety Rules must be read by all inductees and an acknowledgement form completed confirming that they have understood the document and agree to comply with it. A ‘Fire Safety Induction and Familiarisation’ form will also need to be completed and signed

The induction form should be completed (preferably typed) and signed by the Centre Lead/Supervisor and the Institute Manager or their deputy.

Existing card holders please note: Before your card is activated for access to the Blizard Institute you will need to complete the induction course.
 

Personal safety and security within the building is paramount and access must be rigorously controlled. All staff and students must carry and display their identity/access cards at all times and produce them for inspection on demand. Everyone permitted access must be familiar with the local health and safety rules for the building as well as any specific rules governing specialist or core facilities that they have been authorised for.
They must comply with any instructions issued by staff managing those facilities. The cards provide access to those areas of the Blizard Institute that an individual has been permitted entry to following an induction and any additional specific training that may have been required. Under no circumstances should an access card be lent to anyone else.


New laboratory staff should initially be chaperoned, to ensure correct and safe working, when first commencing work in any facility. Unsupervised laboratory work must only be authorised after individuals have received pertinent training and have been evaluated by their supervisor. They may then be deemed competent to work alone. Documentation must be available to support this evaluation.
Members of staff who are working in the laboratories are encouraged to attend all relevant health and safety course provided by the College. Those particularly relevant to those working in the Blizard laboratories are ‘Working with Biological Hazards’ and ‘COSHH Risk Assessment’. A record of all training and competence must be retained by the individual Centres and Core Facilities.

Lone working
As far as is reasonably possible, no student or member of staff should work alone in the laboratories at any time. If it is considered essential that anyone should work outside normal hours (08.00-20.00 weekdays), then details of how this work will be carried out safely must be submitted on a Lone Worker Risk Assessment form for that project and authorised by their Supervisor or Centre Lead. The application must be supported by the provision of the COSHH Risk Assessment forms and any other relevant H&S documents or SOPs relating to the project. Lone working will not be permitted for work experience and undergraduate students.
